Hall of Honor – December 2014 ____________________________________________________

District Governor message:

Our Fall Conference held on Nov. 7-8 at the Crowne Plaza in Sacramento was, from all accounts, one of the best in recent memory.

Honors go to many people for putting on a great program including:

  1. Conference Chair Marty Taub, DTM. She managed her team great leadership by communicating well and ensuring all were working in synch.
  2. Lt. Governor Education & Training John Davis, DTM. He put on an ambitious education program with nine sessions(!) plus a keynote presentation. His organizational and management skills augmented Marty’s efforts very well.
  3. World Champion of Public Speaking Craig Valentine. He presented a keynote presentation and an education session that were both well-received.
  4. Hospitality Room Coordinator Donna Lewis. She took on the role of coordinating the “gathering room” that provided a nice respite from the busy schedule.
  5. Facilities Coordinator Julie Mattox, DTM. Once again, Julie made everyone’s job easier by working well with the hotel staff to organize the conference.
  6. Program Editor Russ Steele, PDG DTM. He created a beautiful full-color work-of-art that was fully-funded by program ads.
  7. Registrar Denise Alder. She continues to hone the registration process and made the process run smoothly (again!).

Many, many more people contributed to the success of the conference. Thank you to all committee chairs and volunteers for your dedication and hard work.

District Governor message:

Welcome to new club Prospect Park Toastmasters, Rancho Cordova, chartered October 1

District 39 Chief Judge Kristi Beres

Kristi Beres DTM

Kristi Beres DTM

Each year, the district crowns a champion for International Speech, Humorous Speech, Evaluation and Table Topic. Leading up to the district finals at the fall and spring conferences, nine divisions, 39 areas and the majority of the 180+ clubs conduct contests.

Overseeing the district’s contests for fairness and adherence to the rules of Toastmasters International is the District 39 Chief Judge Kristi Beres, DTM.

I want to give special recognition this month to Kristi, for her dedication and hours devoted to the contests. She made herself available to all who needed help with their contests, especially the division chief judges who fall under her supervision. She maintained the district’s contest bracket that tracked winners from area to division to district. She gave that extra measure of devotion to her duties that we can all be proud.

If you see Kristi, please offer your appreciation to her for a job well done. Thank you, Kristi!

We are saddened by the passing of Ginger Kane, DTM, PID, on October 9. She joined Toastmasters in 1977 in Oakland and served as District 57 Governor in 1986-1987, leading her District to President’s Distinguished status as the #4 district in the Toastmasters world.

Ginger was elected to the International Board of Directors in Palm Desert, CA, at the 1990 Convention. She is remembered by many Toastmasters throughout Region 1 as sending out “congratulation notes” on the yellow Toastmaster post cards (this was in the era before personal computers and email.)

Following her retirement from the Clorox Company where she was an industrial relations administrator, she and husband Max moved to Lake of the Pines, CA. They joined the Mother Lode Toastmasters club in Grass Valley in the early 2000’s.

Ginger was loved and respected by Toastmasters throughout the world and we in District 39 were fortunate to have her as one of our own.

District Governor message:

Welcome to new club – Sunset Speakers in Red Bluff. They chartered on September 10, 2014

A commendation to:
Division I Governor Wes Johnson, who found a replacement for one of his area governors.
Wes lost one of his area governors, who resigned at the end of August. He had only a few days before the Sept. 1 deadline to have a replacement in place in order for that person to get ALS credit with TI. His successful effort in recruiting Renee Fink by Sept. 1 showed great leadership. Thank you, Wes.

Colin McKechnie, who represented District 39 at the International Speech Contest in Malaysia.
Although Colin didn’t place in the top 3 in his semifinal round, he was one of the crowd favorites. Many people interacted with him after the contest, saying his message of living “One day…at a time” touched them. His humor mixed with a serious subject–his battle with lung cancer–was effective as an inspirational message. How effective was his presentation? He reported that he was asked to do a presentation in Dubai! You made a difference, Colin.

Area and Division Governors, who have scheduled their speech contests in September and October.
The contests are a great way to showcase the Toastmasters program. Their planning and attention to details organizing the contests can attract new members to the program. Make the most of the opportunity by having marketing materials available. Get the word out about the greatest “secret” program in the world.

Deb Cullifer, DTM, exhibited extraordinary dedication in July under extreme duress. Deb, who is the division F governor, suffered the loss of both her father and brother in the same week. Knowing she was scheduled to teach at that weekend’s TLI, Deb diligently prepared and provided materials for another instructor to teach her VP Membership class. I’ve looked to Deb for guidance from the time I joined Toastmasters and she was Super Marketers Club mentor. I still look to her as my mentor, and more importantly, as my friend. I could not have a better role model. She continues to impress and teach me–and many others–lessons in leadership as well as in life. Thank you, Deb. Our deepest condolences to Deb and Bob Cullifer, and their family.
