At Toastmasters, we strongly believe that every person has the potential to become a good communicator and leader. What is required is the chance to develop this potential.
With the Youth Leadership Program (YPL), we help the younger generation develop their potential through practical experience. The communication and leadership practice that the youth experience in this program help them grow to successfully meet the challenges of leadership. These young people are the leaders of tomorrow, by providing them guidance, we are empowering the next generation with a very important skill of life – effective communication.
The Youth Leadership Program is a workshop consisting of eight one- to two-hour sessions that enable young people under the age of 18 to develop their communication and leadership skills. The program is presented during or after school, or on weekends and is limited to 25 participants. In the workshop, young people learn valuable skills including:
- Evaluating their own speaking ability
- Preparing and giving speeches
- Giving impromptu talks
- Controlling their voice, vocabulary and gestures
- Giving constructive feedback and more
A local Toastmasters club serves as sponsor and provides a coordinator to present the program. The individual coordinator attends each meeting, where he or she will lead most of the presentations and counsel participants. The coordinator assigns an assistant who can fill in for the coordinator should he or she be unable to attend a meeting. Meetings generally follow a format similar to that of a Toastmasters club meeting, including an announced agenda, practice in parliamentary procedure, and the selection of presiding officers.
